About Foristell: A Community Built on Heritage and Growth
Preserving Our Roots, Embracing Our Future

Nestled along the I-70 corridor in eastern Missouri, the City of Foristell is a welcoming, close-knit community shaped by more than a century of history, agriculture, and hometown spirit. Though Foristell has seen tremendous growth in recent years, the heart of the city remains grounded in the families, traditions, and industrious spirit that first built this area.
Originally settled by pioneers from Virginia and other eastern states in the mid-1800s, Foristell began as a small but thriving rural hub surrounded by farms, ranches, and tobacco plantations. These early families laid the foundation for the community we know today — a place defined by resilience, hard work, and strong neighborly ties.
Early Settlement and the Beginning of a Town
The story of Foristell begins in 1835, when Virginians William and Nancy Lockett arrived in the area, soon followed by Joel Davis and several other families. As more settlers came, the community quickly grew, establishing churches, farms, small businesses, and gathering places.
By 1847, the Hickory Grove Christian Church was founded — one of the earliest organized institutions in the area. Just a few years later, in 1849, Frederick Blattner opened a trading post and later added a mill, becoming a central figure in the early local economy.
In
1856, landowners
Joel Addison and
Francis M. Davis platted a small town called
Millville (also referred to as Mehlville) near the growing settlement. Around the same time, a post office was established under the name
Snowhill, and plans were drawn up to accommodate a new railroad line.
Railroads, Commerce, and a Growing Community
The arrival of the Wabash, St. Louis & Pacific Railroad brought enormous opportunity to the region. In 1857, Millville was officially platted on both sides of the railroad tracks, and by the end of the 19th century, the area had become a busy railroad and agricultural town.
The railroad served as a vital transportation route — even carrying Civil War troops and materials through the area. The community continued to expand with:
General stores, including Blattner’s large stone building
The Millville Mills, a local centerpiece of commerce
A tobacco factory run by Thomas Mason and Harry Gray
Blacksmith and wagon shops
A hotel and early drug store
Several local grammar schools
During this time, Pierre Foristell, an Irish immigrant who became a major landowner, farmer, and tobacco grower, emerged as a prominent figure.
Becoming the City of Foristell
In 1875, the town’s name was officially changed from Millville to Foristell, honoring Pierre Foristell’s contributions to the community. The Snowhill Post Office also adopted the new name.
Over the next few decades, Foristell continued to grow — with new businesses, prominent families like the Burlingames and Schiermeiers, and continued expansion of its grain, lumber, and shipping industries.
By the turn of the century, Foristell was a thriving rural town, with churches, schools, and a bustling railroad line connecting it to the region.
A Community Moving Forward
Today, Foristell stands as a blend of its historic roots and its modern momentum. The city has experienced significant growth in recent years — nearly doubling in population — yet still retains the peaceful, small-town character cherished by long-time residents.
The city continues to serve as a gateway between Warren County and St. Charles County, offering:
- Safe neighborhoods
- Local businesses
- Expanding developments
- Easy access to major highways
- A supportive, family-focused community
As the city moves toward the future, Foristell remains committed to honoring its heritage while creating new opportunities for families, businesses, and residents.
